Case-based Learning: Studies for Discussion

Learners and visitors who have registered with Casey Hein & Associates are invited to download copywritten case studies that are posted in this section. These provide a rich opportunity for interactive exploration of cases based of realistic problems encountered in caring for patients with multi-factorial diseases and conditions related to the oral cavity.

This is a valuable way to allow learners to consider issues related to patient care which require analysis, collaboration, and formulation of possible solutions or strategies to enhance clinical outcomes. These cases are particularly relevant in addressing the hurdles we face in bringing healthcare professionals together to discuss the significance of oral health in sustaining overall health, and providing the framework by which innovative solutions to patient care can be fostered.

By introducing stories about patients and presenting dilemmas on their professional care, participants are encouraged to consider clinical issues from the perspectives of their own discipline, those of other healthcare professionals, as well as the patient’s perspective. The goal is to stimulate critical thinking, provide a catalyst for interprofessional collaboration, and create potential evidence-based solutions in caring for patients who have complex, interrelated medical and dental problems.

These case studies incorporate findings of scientifically supported oral-systemic interrelationships that Casey discusses in programs she is scheduled to deliver, via internet or live lecture. For many of these programs, registrants will be asked to review one or more case studies before the presentation. These cases are also helpful for independent learners, private study clubs, staff discussions, and for dental hygiene educators’ use in the classroom. Please do not remove the logo on these materials as Casey Hein owns the copyright on these case studies.
