As one of Casey Hein & Associates’ resources to increase referral of patients to dentists and dental hygienists from non-dental healthcare providers, this 2×3 foot, full color poster summarizes evidence of periodontal-systemic links.

The poster was designed by Casey Hein who commissioned highly respected medical illustrator, Zach Turner of Blue Motion Studios, to create this anatomically detailed artwork. The poster is intended for dentists and dental hygienists to give to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, diabetes educators and other healthcare practitioners to display in examination rooms, or pharmacy dispensaries. In these unique clinical settings patients can view the poster to learn about the threat periodontal disease poses to overall health. The poster highlights how periodontal bacteria enter the circulatory system, causing inflammation in organs distant to the oral cavity. Associations to coronary heart disease and stroke, complications of diabetes and pregnancy, respiratory infections, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, among others, are illustrated (along with references). Various risk factors for periodontal disease are listed. The poster’s call to action is, “If you have any of these risk factors, just ask your dentist or dental hygienist to discuss these with you. If you don’t have a dentist, just ask your physician, nurse, pharmacist, dietician or other healthcare provider to refer you to an oral healthcare provider to be examined for gum disease.” Many dentists and dental hygienists have purchased these posters to give to local medical practices and independent pharmacies to educate patients and build direct referral of patients at risk for periodontal disease.
